A delegation of APG23 in New York for UNGASS 2016 - 20.04.2016

The United Nations will hold a special session of the General Assembly on Drugs (UNGASS 2016) from 18 to 21 April in New York.

Originally, the UN General Assembly on drugs should have been held in 2019, but the presidents of Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico have requested an advance, given the urgency of the problems on the plate. In recent years, in fact, the international war on drugs, rather than solve, has exacerbated the public health issues, have increased in prisons, fueled corruption, violence and the black market in drugs. The governments of many countries have begun to take a new approach to reform policies and national laws, stimulating an unprecedented momentum for change.

Maria Mercedes Rossi, already represented dell'APG23 in Geneva and Bartolomeo Barberis representative of the Drugs sector of the APG23 will be in New York to participate in this event as representatives of APG23. Furthermore, Dr. Rossi will speak at a parallel event organized by the International Institute of the United Nations for Research on Crime and Justice (UNICRI) titled "Establishing evidence-based criteria for the assessment of substanceuse disorders, to support the criminal justice system in the sentencing and application of alternative measures to prison"
